Alfred James Pacino was born in the Bronx (East Harlem), New York in the United States. He was born in April 1940 to Rose Gerard and Salvatore Alfio who divorced in 1942. Alfred attended Herman Ridder Junior High School, the High School of Performing Arts, Herbert Berghof Studio and the Actors Studio. In his teenager years, Al Pacino wanted to be a baseball player. He was nicknamed ‘Sonny’ by his friends in the hood. While at Herman Ridder Junior High School, he dropped out of most classes but English class. The actor was involved in drugs at a young age. Two of his best friends died of drug abuse.

When he joined the High School of Performing Arts, he also dropped out at 17 years of age. When his mother, who he grew up with, forced him to stay in school, he ran away from home.
