Jason Kander is a product of his parents, Janet Secor, a juvenile probation officer, and Steve Kander, a police officer who later became a small business owner. He was born on May 4, 1981, in Overland Park, Kansas, and raised in Shawnee, Kansas alongside his younger brother and other foster children his parents raised. His family was Jewish and as such was raised in the Jewish religion.

Jason Kander enlisted in the Army National Guard after the September 9/11 attack. This was while he was pursuing his law degree at Georgetown University. At the completion of his law degree, in 2005, he volunteered as an Intelligence officer for the United States Army in an Afghanistan tour between 2006 and 2007. On deployment, Jason Kander took the position of a leadership instructor at Missouri Army National Guard’s officers’ certificate school at Fort Leonard Wood. In honor of his excellent service, Jason Kander was given the Maj. Gen. Strom Thurmond award in 2010.

In 2005, Jason alongside his wife Diana founded a political action committee known as Heartland Democrats of America in Kansas City. In 2016, he contested for the Senate seat of Missouri but lost the election to Roy Blunt.

In June 2018, Jason Kander announced his interest in running for the office of the Mayor of Kansas in 2019, but then, dropped the race after he announced in October same year, that he will be withdrawing as a result of an untreated post-traumatic stress disorder.
