Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a prominent name in the American legal world. Ginsburg is the Associate judge in the Supreme Court of America. She has the distinction of being the second woman to be at this prestigious position.

Bader Ginsburg Early Life And Career

Ruth Ginsburg was born in New York City on March 15, 1933. Her father’s name is Nathan Bader and mother’s name is Celia Bader. They lived in the Flatbush neighborhood of New York. Ginsburg hailed from a lower middle class family. Celia greatly influenced Ginsburg during her childhood. She taught Ginsburg the significance of quality education and the power of independence. Ginsburg had an elder sister who died of meningitis at the age of six. She also has an elder brother. Ginsberg’s mother herself could not attend college as she had to work in a garment factory. Celia did this in order to earn money to pay for Ginsberg’s brother’s college education. This attitude of her mother deeply influenced Ginsberg in her formative years. Ginsberg attended Madison High School in Brooklyn. She excelled in her studies. Celia took great care of her daughter’s education. Such was her devotion to her daughter’s education that she often took Ginsberg to the library. However, before Ginsberg could graduate from school, her mother died battling cancer. In 1954 Ginsberg earned her bachelor’s degree with first class from Cornell University. When Ginsberg attained 21 years of age, she began working for the Social Security Administration office in Oklahoma. The year 1956 saw Ginsberg’s stepping into the world of Law. This year she enrolled herself at Harvard Law School.

Interestingly her class had only 9 women including herself amongst 500 men. Ginsberg later transferred herself to Columbia Law School, New York as she had to accompany her husband who took a new job in New York. Ginsberg has the distinction of being the only woman to be on two major law reviews. In 1959 she graduated from Columbia University and shared the first position with one of her colleagues. Although Ginsberg had excellent credentials for employment as a lawyer it was hard to come by just because she was a female and a mother. After hard lobbying by one of Ginsberg’s professors she earned the job of a clerk at U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York where she worked from 1959 to 61. From 1962–63 Ginsberg served as associate director of the Columbia Law School’s Project on International Procedure. 1963 saw Ginsberg joining as professor at the Rutgers School of Law. In 1970 Ginsberg got professionally involved in advocating the cause for gender equality. Ginsberg was a well known figure in the gender discrimination legislation. 1980 was a significant year in Ginsberg’s career. This year saw Ginsberg’s appointment to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in Washington by Jimmy Carter, United States President. Another significant event in Ginsberg’s career happened when U.S president Bill Clinton on June 14, 1993 declared her as his nominee to the U.S Supreme Court. Her nomination was unanimously endorsed. Ginsberg who is currently aged 87 is the fourth oldest judge to have served the U.S Supreme Court ever.

Ginsberg has got many honours and recognitions. 2008 saw Ginsberg getting inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Time magazine also gave her the recognition of being among the 100 most influential people in 2015. She was also bestowed with Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from many prestigious U.S universities.

Ginsberg married Martin Ginsburg, tax lawyer of international acclaim, just after she earned her graduation from Cornell University. In 1955 Ginsberg gave birth to a baby daughter Jane C. Ginsburg. Jane is a professor of Law at Columbia Law School.

The couple’s second issue was a son named James Steven Ginsburg, born in the year 1965. He is the founder president of ‘Cedille Records’. Shortly after the first child was born Martin Ginsburg was diagnosed with testicular cancer which was a big blow to the family. Tragically Martin succumbed to his disease in the mid of 2010.
