Anthony Kapel Jones was born on September 20, 1968 in Jackson Tennessee. He is an American news commentator, author and lawyer.

He is the son of Loretta Jean was a high school teacher and Willie Anthony Jones a middle school principal, has a twin sister called Angela.

As he kept hearing stories about Martin Luther King Jr , John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy and about their works he became devoted to them as far as naming them after the Star Wars characters.

Van attended Jackson Central- Merry High School in 1986 and then attended University of Tennessee at Martin (UT Martin) where he acquired a Bachelor of Science in Communication and Political Science.

He worked at The Jackson Sun as an intern and that’s where he adopted the name ‘Van’ when he was 17 years old. He helped launch a number of independent publications that he later credited UT Martin for preparing him for a larger life. Van later moved to Connecticut where he attended Yale Law School.

In 1992 Van became one of the several law students selected by the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights in San Francisco in the aftermath of Rodney King’s beating and trial. Because of the verdict passed there were protests which led Van and others to be arrested but later his charges were dropped by the District Attorney.

He was deeply affected by the verdict and in an interview in 2005 he stated that he had just been a rowdy nationalist on April 28th but by August 1992 he had become a communist.

His activism was prodded by seeing the deep racial inequality in New Haven, Connecticut during the prosecution of drug use.

After he graduated in Law school with his juris degree he became afflicted with many activities and co-founded a socialist collective called Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM).

In 1995 he initiated their project Bay Area Police Watch which was a hotline of lawyers’ referral service dealt with victims of cases of police abuse.

In 1999 to 2000 he led a campaign to defeat Preposition 21 that would increase penalties for variety of violent crimes and required juvenile offenders to be tried as adults.

In 2005 he co-founded a web based grassroots organization to address Black issues called Color of Change. Also he began promoting eco- capitalism and environmental justice. In 2009 he was appointed as Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Many Republicans criticized him because of previous acts and support of a convicted prisoner Mumia Abu- Jamal thus he had to resign the same year. He said that he had been a subject of vicious smear campaign and that they were using distortions to divide.

He is the author of the Green Collar Economy, Rebuild the Dream and beyond the Messy Truth which were bestselling books.

H was a co-founder of Magic Labs Media LLC. He is a regular CNN political commentator and he led the fight to pass the bipartisan criminal justice reform legislation ‘First Step Act’.
