Leonard Ford also known as Louie Rankin (66) was a Jamaican dancehall reggae artist and actor. Rankin was born Leonard Ford, Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica in 1953. He spent his childhood in Rockfort, Wareika Hill and East Kingston in Jamaica and is most famously known for his successful single “Typewriter,” released in 1992, which won him a Grammy, and for playing the role of the gangsta Lennox “Ox” in the 1998 movie “Belly” alongside rappers Nas and DMX. His other famous roles include playing “Teddy Bruckshut” in the 2002 underground Jamaican cult movie “Shottas” alongside Ky-Mani Marley, Dj Khaled, and Spragga Benz, and “Choppa” in the 2014 movie “We Run These Streets”.
Rankin often referred to himself as the “Original Don Dada” or “the real Jamaican Don Dada”, in his lyrics, and was known by the same name among his contemporaries and competition. He passed away in September 2019, in Ontario, Canada in a car crash .

Rankin grew up in Jamaica and went to the Trinityville Secondary School before becoming an artist. He lived and was based out of Toronto, Ontario for most of his life although he performed all over Canada, in the United States and around the world during his career.

In 1985, he started to gain traction with radio airplay and continued to play dance halls, and dominated the 80’s dancehall scene.
His 1992 album Showdown featured his hit single “Typewriter”, which catapulted him to fame and made him a house-hold name in Jamaica. It was Typewriter which launched Rankin to wider fame in the early ‘90s and got him a major recording contract. He released his album Lethal Weapon in 1993. A few of his hit songs include: Typewriter, The Muscle, The Sting, Monster Move, Don Doc, Hot Me Hot, Put on Your Negligee, Don Dadda, Poison, Lethal Weapon, Jamaica, and Bed Talk.
It was after his third studio album he got started in movies. He starred in several hit movies like Belly, Shottas and Choppa. In 2015 Rankin starred as Leroy Lucky Johnson in the movie, “Rainbow City”, and also produced the movie. He also starred as Radigan in the 2015 short Q. Rankin had recently announced on Instagram that he was shooting a movie in Toronto with Morrison’s company, iHouse Records .
Rankin was close friends with artists Naz, DMX and DJ Khaled, with whom he has worked for over 20 years, and appeared in DJ Khaled’s 2016 music video for his song “Nas Album Done”, re-joining with Nas and Khaled. He was a huge fan of the Toronto Raptors.
Rankin was a member of the Screen Actors Guild. Rankin was married to a woman from New York, with whom he has 3 children. He was estranged from his wife for the past 30 years, and though not legally separated, Rankin then settled into a relationship with his girlfriend Jewels Sykes. The couple have 3 daughters together. Sykes was also his executive assistant. She works as a manager-promoter and screenwriter in Toronto.
How Did Louie Rankin Die?
On September 30, 2019, Rankin was involved in a fatal the crash with a transport truck which occurred on Highway 89 in Ontario. Rankin was killed instantly in the crash.
After his death, is girlfriend had set up a Gofund me page to cover the expenses for his funeral, claiming that the money due from insurance was tied up due to investigations from the insurance companies of the accident, and because they invested all his money in his latest album. There was a lot of criticism as well as support pouring in the GoFund me page.
