He was born on Oct. 7, 1955, in Paris, France. His parents are Chinese. His father, Hsiao-Tsiun Ma, was a violinist and professor of music at Nanjing National Central University (now Nanjing University) and his mother, Marina Lu was a singer. His family moved to New York when Ma was 5 years old.
