Porter was born in a family of musicians. She was the great-granddaughter of the very famous Worcester rabbi, Joseph Klein and her grandmother ran the Charlotte Klein Dance Center. Born to father, Ric Porter who was the lead singer, songwriter, and co-founder of the Worcester-based band Zonkaraz and mother Laura Klein was a dancer. In Los Angeles, a show producer overheard Alisan humming in the hotel lobby where her mother was preparing a dance duo for their appearance on Star Search. He was so touched by Alisan’s singing skills that he booked her for the next episode. She has been singing since she was three and at age five, she became the youngest winner in the history of the TV talent show, Star Search. She spent her next five years building her resume in acting by appearing in a TV series called Chicken Soup, Parenthood and I Love You to Death. She has also appeared on Pee Wee’s Playhouse Season 2 as one of the Playhouse gang. Through her teens, she continued her acting though she also focussed on her studies and school theatre productions.

After her graduation, she moved to New York for the audition of Broadway shows and was cast in the show Footloose. Soon she started performing in the area rock band and it was not quite behind when the band The Raz was formed in 2003 with Alisan Porter as the lead vocalist and main songwriter. But unfortunately, The Raz split up in 2004. In March 2005, she found her new band, The Alisan Porter Project and showed a spellbound performance in the revival of A Chorus Line. In 2007 she went to work on making her own album and released her debut album in 2009. Later on, she started working as a lifestyle columnist along with other ventures and then married her longtime boyfriend, Brian Autenreth, an actor in 2012. Once she stepped into motherhood she started a Facebook group for mothers called Lil’ Mamas for the new mothers.

She relocated to Los Angeles in 2015 and realized that her true passion is singing. In 2016, she became a contestant for The Voice Season 10 and sang “Blue Bayou” for her blind audition. this performance of hers was such a hit that all four couches gave their approval and the clip went viral. While the show was successfully running, she got various Billboard charts with “Blue Bayou” and as well as for the covers of Aerosmith’s “Cryin”, the Eagles’ “Desperado”, and Patty Griffin’s “Let Him Fly.” She signed a contract with Universal Music Group after winning the title of Season 10.
