Michael Vincent Hayden is of Irish-American descent. He was born on March 17, 1945, to his parents, Sadie (nee Murray) and Harry V. Hayden Jr., in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has two siblings — a sister Debby and a brother Henry. His father was a welder who worked for a manufacturing company in Pennsylvania.

Michael attended his Elementary School in St. Peter’s Elementary School in Pittsburgh. After graduating, he proceeded to North Catholic High School.

Hayden earned a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1967 from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He also earned his Master’s degree in modern American history from the same university.

He was commissioned into Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program in 1969 through Duquesne University.

One of Michael Hayden’s earliest jobs was working as an equipment manager for the Steelers after graduating from high school. His career with the United States Air Force began with his being commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1967.

While in the military service, Hayden rose through the ranks, and on April 22, 2005, he became a four-star general. His services in the armed force involved serving as director of the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency when the course of world events was changing at a rapid rate.

Before Michael Hayden became Director of the National Security Agency, he served as deputy chief of staff for United Nations Command and U.S. Forces in South Korea, the Joint Command and Control Warfare Center, he served in senior staff positions at the Pentagon, at U.S. European Command, also worked in intelligence in Guam. Between 1996 and 1997, Hayden served as Commander of the Air Intelligence Agency (AIA).

Between March 1999 to April 2005, Michael Hayden served as the Director of the National Security Agency and Chief of the Central Security Service at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. Hayden’s presence in the National Security Agency(NSA) brought effective management structure, transparency, and modern days IT infrastructure to the agency.

From May 2005 to May 2006 Hayden became the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence following the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, which states that the CIS would no longer run the intelligence community.

Michael Hayden was confirmed the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency by full U.S. Senate vote on May 26, 2006.

On July 1, 2008, Michael Hayden retired from the United States Air Force and stepped down for the new Director of Central Intelligence on February 12, 2009.

In April 2009, Hayden joined the Chertoff Group, a security consulting firm founded by Michael Chertoff, former Department of Homeland Security secretary as the Principal. He also serves on a variety of boards and consultancies

General Michael Hayden had been a frequent commentator and expert on issues relating to intelligence matters like cybersecurity, government surveillance, geopolitics, and more. He has appeared on major news outlets like CNN, HBO, among others.

General Hayden is also a visiting professor at the George Mason University Schar School of Policy and Government.
