Timothy Naftali was born and raised in Montreal Quebec. His parents James D. and Marjorie Naftali had him on January 31, 1962.

Timothy Naftali began his career at the University of Hawaii as an assistant professor in the history department. His work at the university lasted between 1993 to 1997. Between 1996 to 1998, he was a visiting professor at the history department of Yale University.

With Naftali’s work having more focus on counterterrorism and the cold war, he served as an associate professor at the University of Virginia. There the Miller Center for Public Affairs’ presidential recording program.

Naftali served as the first director of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda, California. During his time at Nixon, Timothy Naftali saw to the release of about 44million pages of the presidential documents including the nearly 3000 hours of Nixon tapes. As part of his primary responsibility at Nixon, Naftali in March 2011, authored the watergate exhibition that gained lots of media attention.

He served as a consultant to the 9/11 commission where he was saddled with the responsibility to write the history of America’s counterterrorism policy.

Naftali also severed in the Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Records Interagency Working Group between 2014 and 2015.

He was appointed the director of New York University’s Tamiment Library & Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives. Also, he served as co-director of the Center for the United States and the Cold War until August of 2016

Timothy Naftali is a CNN presidential historian and has also served as CNN’s historical consultant to the Original Series, “Tricky Dick”. Also, he was NETFLIX’s historical consultant for the series, Designated Survivor.

Naftali’s work at the 9/11 commission was later published in 2005 as Blind Spot: The Secret History of American Counterterrorism.

Timothy Naftali along with Russian academic Aleksandr Fursenko used the Soviet-era documents to co-author two books; One Hell of a Gamble: Khrushchev, Castro, and Kennedy, 1958-1964 and Khrushchev’s Cold War: The Inside Story of an American Adversary. The books were published in 1997 and 2006 respectively.

He also co-authored Impeachment: An American History with Peter Baker, Jeffrey Engel, and Jon Meacham. This is his recent publication. It was published in 2018.

He co-edited John F. Kennedy: The Great Crises with Philip D Zelikow and Ernest R. May. The book was published in 2001.

In 2007, Naftali published the biography of George H. W. Bush.
