After graduating from Harvard University in 1990, Lisa Monaco started her career as a research associate at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars for The Wilson Quarterly. She also worked with Joe Biden for 2 years during 1992-94 who was the chairperson for the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary at that time. Monaco worked on VAWA which was passed in 1994.

When at law school, Monaco worked as an intern with the D.C. Superior Judiciary, the Department of Justice of the United States, and the White House Counsel. Monaco began her legal career after graduating from law school as a law clerk to the Honorable Jane R. Roth of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit from 1998 to 2001. Lisa is an associate U.S. attorney in the U.S. Between 2001 and 2007, the District of Columbia attorney’s office. Monaco’s experience as a Federal Prosecutor includes working from 2004 to 2006 on the Enron Task Force.

In senior management positions at the FBI, Lisa Monaco worked first as an advisor to FBI Director Robert Mueller and then as his Chief of Staff. Up till 2009, she retained this job. In 2009, the then U.S. Deputy Attorney General David W. Ogden named Monaco to serve as Assistant Deputy Attorney General, focused on the issue of national security. Later, she worked as the Deputy Attorney General’s Principal Associate.

In 2011, Monaco was the first female to be selected as the Assistant Attorney General for National Security by President Barack Obama. The first-ever network of national cyber security expert prosecutors was also formed under her command.

Lisa Monaco was named President Barack Obama’s Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism on January 25, 2013. In this position, Monaco was responsible for informing the President on all facets of counter-terrorism policy and strategy and for coordinating operations relating to homeland security on issues pertaining from domestic and foreign terrorist threats to cybercrime, catastrophes, and environmental disasters. Monaco continued to work for this post till the end of 2017.

Monaco is currently a non-resident senior fellow with the Belfer Center’s Homeland Security Project, a Senior Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, a Distinguished Senior Fellow at New York University Law School, and Co-Chair of the Aspen Cyber Strategy Group.
