Paul Begala was born in New Jersey, U.S on May 12, 1961, to an Irish American mother, Margaret Peggy, and a Hungarian American father, David Begala. He is brother to his three siblings Chris Begala, Michael Begala, and David Begala. They were all raised in Missouri City, Texas where their father worked as an oil-field equipment salesman.
He studied at the University of Texas at Austin where he earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor. During his time in the University, he vied for the Student Government president but unfortunately, he finished second to a write-in- campaign for the Hank Hallucination, a character from the campus comic strip Eyebeam.

Begala first entered the national political scene when he along with his business partner and Democratic strategist, James Carville started a consulting firm. Carville and Begala, helped then Governor of Arkansas Bill Clinton get elected in the 1992 presidential election. Begala later served in Clinton’s administration as a counselor to the president. He was also a close advisor to Clinton and helped define and defend the administration’s agenda, serving as a principal public spokesman. Mr. Begala also coordinated policy, politics, and communications.
Apart from the 1992 presidential election, Carville and Paul have had other well-known political victories including the 1988 re-election campaign of incumbent New Jersey U.S Senator Frank Lautenberg, the 1991 Pennsylvania U.S Senate victory of Harris Wofford, and the Gubernatorial victories of Robert Casey.
After Begala left Clinton’s administration, he joined Georgetown University as a research professor of government and public policy. In 2006, he served as a senior strategist for the United States Senate Campaign of Bob Casey Jr, who defeated his rival Sen. Rick Santorum. In the year 2007, Paul served as a Political Leadership Scholar at the University of Georgia School of law.
From 1999 Begala together with his co-host Oliver North hosted the political debate show Equal Time on MSNBC until the year 2000 when it was closed. Afterward in the year 2002 until 2005, he worked on CNN where he hosted the political debate show Crossfire. His co-host was Mr. Carville who was the left-wing host while the right-wing host alternated between Robert Novak and Tucker Carlson.
